You will get: Stability through impact is top-notch. Both drivers have plenty of adjustability options. For now, price point is more than affordable.

If you’ve paid attention to golf in the last few years, you’ve undoubtedly seen advertisements for PXG golf equipment.  You remember these ads specifically for their in-your-face messages and cool graphics.  In fact, the company’s tagline that “No One Makes Golf Clubs the Way We Do.  Period.” is announced at the end of every ad is hard to forget.

For as brilliant as PXG’s marketing might be, their golf equipment seems to live up to all the hype too.  Everyone from Tour Pros to rank beginners seems to be playing some sort of PXG club.  D

One of the company’s newest creations is the line of O11 X Proto Drivers.  Both the Proto and Proto X+ are hot.

Let’s take a closer look.

Key Features

  • Clubs are designed for players with steeper angles of attack.  Think the typical weekend slicer.
  • Precision weighting technology features four weight ports that can be adjusted to optimize trajectory and clubhead mass dispersion.
  • Adjustable hosel allows for 1.5 degrees loft variance either up or down from standard loft.

Who Should Buy the PXG 0811 X Proto or X+ Proto Drivers?

It’s still a little too early to tell precisely, but all the information we’ve sifted through so far suggests that these drivers are going to be great options for players of any ability.

For players that want to hit the ball a little higher while reducing spin off the tee, the O11 X Proto driver might be the better of the two options.

Conversely, players looking for a little more spin and an upward angle of attack, the O11 X+ Proto might be preferable.

One thing is for certain, if these drivers perform like all the other equipment PXG has turned out, they’ll be a solid addition to anyone’s bag.

PXG 0811 X Proto or X+ Proto Drivers Detailed Review

Design and Technology

From an aesthetic standpoint, these drivers are what you’ve probably come to expect from PXG.  A minimalist sole is complemented by a crown that’s black and silver.  While both drivers aren’t the flashiest looking things in the world, they ooze confidence and quality.

PXG O11 X Proto Driver

This driver is the lower spinning of the two and has a lower CG to promote a high launch.  The head is small in profile and designed for players with either flat or descending angles of attack with their driver.

Four weight ports on the club’s sole allow for easy customization for optimal launch and spin conditions.

Another aspect that players continue to rave about with the 011 X Proto is its incredible sound and feel as the ball comes off the face.

PXG 011 X+ Proto Driver

The most noticeable difference with this driver is its mid CG that promotes more spin for players with ascending angles of attack.  Again, this design characteristic is designed to produce optimal launch conditions for players with this swing type.

Just like the O11 X Proto, the O11 X+ Proto has four weight ports in the sole making it one of the most easily adjustable PXG has ever made.

Customizing this club to your specific swing needs is a piece of cake.

Specs

Even though the PXG O11 X Proto and X+ Proto drivers look similar, there are some marked differences in their specifications.

The first major noticeable difference is loft.  The O11 X Proto comes in nine degrees of loft and can be adjusted 1.5 degrees up or down.  On the other hand, the O11 X+ Proto comes in 10.5 degrees of loft and can be adjusted 1.5 degrees in either direction.

The lie angle of the O11 X Proto is 60 degrees.  Length is 45” and head mass is 206 grams.  Specs are the same in the O11 X+ Proto.

Stock shaft options in both drivers include options from Aldila, Project X, Mitsubishi, Fujikara, and EvenFlow respectively.

Our Experience

I’m sworn to secrecy (for the time being) about how I was able to get my hands on these newest drivers from PXG.  Let’s just say one of our staff has an “in”.

With that being said, I have to say that I’m impressed with both the O11 X Proto and X+ Proto.  Even though the heads in both drivers are 460cc, they appear small and compact behind the ball at address.  The sleek design and shape inspired confidence for me.

I also enjoyed the sound of the ball coming off the face and the stable feeling through impact.  Whereas some drivers feel “tinny”, both these heads felt solid.

When the time comes, I recommend these drivers to anyone looking for an upgrade.

Conclusion

PXG didn’t exactly make a quiet entrance into the golf market.  As a result, they set the bar high for themselves through aggressive marketing and high prices.  So far however, they’ve more than lived up to their self-purported hype.

If history repeats itself, there’s no reason to think that the trend won’t continue with the O11 X Proto and X+ Proto drivers.  I don’t know about you, but I’m certainly going to keep my ear to the ground for more information and a release date for both of these clubs.
