Best Game Improvement Drivers

One of the largest advantages of modern technology in golf is the addition of game improvement golf clubs that help give players more help with their swings. If you are a player that struggles to hit your golf shots consistently then you may be able to benefit from a more forgiving driver.

Drivers can become more forgiving in several ways. The higher the moment of inertia, or MOI, a driver has, the more forgiving it can be on off-centered strikes. MOI refers directly to a clubs resistance to twist and can save golfers valuable yards and help make their shot veer less offline. Raising the launch angle and spin rates of your drives can also help you add stability to your golf shots and help you find more fairways.

These terms can become complicated and knowing which driver is best for you can be difficult. To help make this process easy, we have compiled a list of some of the most forgiving drivers on the market. We also break down each part of the modern driver and the ball flight terms that you should know as you begin to shop for your next club.

When Do You Use A Golf Driver?

Always use a tee when hitting with your golf driver.

Commonly players use their drivers from the tee box only on par-4 and par-5 golf holes. At times, advanced players may choose to use their drivers from the ground in order to reach very long par-5 greens. Striking a driver without a tee is very difficult and many times this results in a very poor shot, even for some of the game’s best players.

Finding the Best Driver for Your Golf Game

Golfers have unique actions during their swings that influence their delivery to the golf ball. These differences make certain clubs perform differently in each player’s hands. Understand your swing characteristics and how you can improve your golf driving is the best first step in knowing which driver is right for you. Your ideal driver will offer a blend of maximum distance and accuracy and create confidence as you practice and play. Your ball flight preferences and budget will play a large role in determining which driver is best for your game.

Budget

For many players, getting new clubs every year is simply too much to ask. Luckily, even prior generation equipment can be built for your swing and can be a great new addition to your bag. Getting clubs on the second-hand market is another great way to improve your equipment without spending too much. Knowing how much you are comfortable spending will save you and your club fitter time when you go to test different driver models.

Key Factors in Creating the Ideal Golf Shot

While there is no one ideal golf shot shape or style, several factors remain consistent throughout a large number of successful ball flight patterns. Players should feel comfortable with their ball flight and understand the advantages and disadvantages that style may bring. During your club fitting, is it important to understand common terms that will be used so that you have an idea of why clubs fit you or they do not. These ball flight parameters will influence the golf shot distance, curvature, and consistency.

Ball Speed

Ball Speed. Source adamyounggolf

Ball speed is the speed the golf ball leaves the club face after impact. Ball speed is the result of how fast you swing, your delivery conditions, and where you strike the golf ball on the club face. Shots struck within the sweet spot will have a higher ball speed than shots struck away from it. Different swing dynamics will influence how much ball speed you can create given your club head speed. As a rule, golf clubs are limited to producing a ball speed that is no more than 1.5 times the amount of club head speed a golfer can produce. That means that for every one mile per hour of driver club head speed you have, you should be getting around 1.5 miles per hour of ball speed.

Players swinging at 90 miles per hour with their driver should be getting around 130 to 135 miles per hour of ball speed. 100 miles per hour club head speed will result in ball speeds up to 150 miles per hour. PGA tour averages are around 112 miles per hour club head speed with ball speeds above 165 miles per hour. If you, like many, are not getting these types of ball speeds for whatever club head speed you’re bringing, there are improvements that can be made in your equipment or your technique.

Launch Angle

Launch Angle. Source adamyounggolf

Launch angle is the angle the golf ball leaves the club face after impact. This angle is taken from the ground and has a large influence on how high your golf ball flies, how far it carries in the air, and how much roll it gets after landing. Most players will get their best balance of distance and accuracy with launch angles between 12 and 15 degrees.

The launch angle of your driver shots are determined by these factors:

Clubface Static Loft =The static loft of your golf club is the loft that is marked on the club head or can be found in the specifications sheet for irons. This measurement is taken while the golf club is resting and may not be an accurate representation of your golf balls launch angle.

Dynamic Loft =Dynamic loft is the measure of the golf club’s loft at impact with the golf ball. During a player’s swing, the angles they create can decrease or increase the static loft of the golf club. These differences play the largest role in determining how high or low your golf ball will launch.

Angle of Attack (AoA) =One of the major swing factors that influence dynamic loft and subsequent launch angles is the angle of attack. The angle of attack is the upwards or downwards angle that the golf club is traveling along when it impacts the golf ball.

Impact Location =Where the golf ball is struck on the club face will also direct the launch angle of the shot. Golf balls struck higher on the club face will launch higher than balls struck low in the club head.

Balancing these important launch angle characteristics with the other components of the golf balls flight will give you a more stable and long drives that help you shoot better scores.

Ball Spin

Ball Travel.

As golf balls fly through the air, they experience different spin rates that affect how far they fly and how quickly they stop once on the ground. Sidespin is a critical component of how much your golf ball will curve during its flight and is the main factor in shots that veer violently offline.

Here are some of the ways sidespin occurs, and what it does to your golf shot

Draw

Drawing golf shots curve right to left for right-handed golfers and left to right for left-handed players. These shots are the result of impact conditions that have a club face closed to the club path. Shots that draw too much are termed a hook.

Fade

Fading golf shots are the opposite of draws. They curve left to right for right-handed golfers and right to left for left-handed players. These shots are the result of impact conditions that have a club face open to the club path. Shots that fade too much are referred to as a slice.

Topspin

Topspin is a symptom of severe misstrikes on full shots. Topspin can also happen once the golf ball has come into contact with the ground, especially on the greens. Topspin should not be confused with too little backspin, however, both have a similar detrimental effect to your golf shots. Shots hit with topspin will fall quickly out of the air and are most common when golfer “top” the golf ball.

Backspin

Shots that become airborne each possess a rate of backspin. This backspin creates the lift necessary for the golf ball to climb into the air. More backspin equals more lift and more height. Backspin combined with your launch angle will have the greatest influence on how high your golf shots go, how far they carry, and how quickly they stop in the fairways, roughs, or on the greens.

Top Rated Golf Drivers Features

Golf equipment manufacturers create drivers that differ in their visual profiles and their internal design to help cater to each golfer. However, even among different companies, sever important features remain consistent that help players match their swings to their club of choice. Balancing a club head that fills you with confidence, a shaft that helps you create a consistent and repeatable deliversy, and a golf grip that ensures a great connection between you and the club is a difficult challenge. Below are some ideas to help.

Shaft

Types of Golf Shafts. Source callawaygolf

Finding the right shaft for your club can be tricky. With so many option and different weight, flexes, bend profiles, and prices it can be hard to know where to begin. Driver shafts typically range between 40- and 90-grams with flexes between ladies and extra-stiff. As a general rule, higher swing speed players will enjoy the feedback of heavier, stiffer shafts. Slower swing players will be more comfortable with lighter, softer options. These are guidelines, however, and it is important that you do not choose a shaft simply based on your swing speed.

Aftermarket driver shafts can cost almost as much as the entire driver itself. Making that large of an investment can be too much to ask for many players. Understand that paying more doesn’t mean getting more unless it fits your swing. Golf shafts should be considered devices that help players get the golf club to the golf ball, in the same way, most often. Your ideal shaft will help you deliver the golf club to the golf ball in the appropriate spot and help create the ideal launch, spin, and ball speed numbers.

The best way to know which shaft is right for you is to try different models once you have found your club head of choice. Each driver manufacturer compliments their club with driver profiles to fit a wide range of golfers. Please, do not hesitate to ask your club fitter for a different shaft if you are uncomfortable with the one you are testing. With several thousand driver club head and shaft combinations available, there is no excuse for buying something you don’t absolutely love.

Head Size

There many head sizes. Source golf.com

Drivers also differ in the size of the head. Modern drivers range between 440 and 460 cubic centimeters, cc, in size. Among these different sizes, the shape and depth of these club heads can vary as well. These arrangments help give each model different launch, spin, and forgiveness profiles that need to be matched for your swing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequent questions often come with buying a golf driver and we have included some for you below.

Q: How Do I Measure A Golf Driver’s Shaft Length?

A: The length of your driver and its shaft can be found by using a measuring stick or tape measure. Most drivers are created with a length that is less than 48-inches so anything longer than that will work. Place the club into a playing position as if it were behind a golf ball. Next, align the measuring device along the golf club shaft. The length from the butt end of the grip to the bottom of the club head is the driver length. The distance from the butt end of the grip to the hosel is the shaft length. Some golf club measurements will also describe the club length from the butt end of the grip to the middle of the golf club face so be aware of this if you are trying to match a new shaft.

Q: Driver vs Woods: What is the Difference?

A: Drivers and fairway woods can appear very similar and have similar, or even the same lofts. However, differences in head shape and size make them useful for alternative purposes. Drivers are designed to be most effective when striking a golf ball from a tee. Fairway woods are crafted to be versatile enough to strike golf balls from the tee or the ground. While it is possible to strike a driver from the ground, the sole shape makes this more difficult and often players find better results using their fairway woods whenever not on the tee box.

Q: What is an Adjustable Driver, and Does it Really Matter?

A: Adjustable drivers allow players to build their drivers to their games like never before. Adjustable hosels can create an array of lofts, face angles, and golf club lies that help players find more distance and better accuracy. Moveable weights help layers to align their swing with a center of gravity that can help create less sidespin curavture and backspin for more distance.

Q: How Do You Know if a Driver is USGA Conforming?

A: Before a new driver model is released, the United States Golf Association tests it to ensure that it conforms to the rules of golf. This regulation makes sure that players remain the most important thing in golf competition. The USGA conforming list can be found at the link provided below.
