Unlike a lot of irons that are geared toward a specific type of player, the ZX5s can benefit golfers of all different playing abilities. The company touts these clubs as players’ distance irons. If you’re someone that wants more consistency and overall improved performance out of your irons, the ZX5s are filled with plenty of technology to help you out. At the same time, if you prefer a sleek, traditional looking iron, and prioritize playability and feel, these irons have plenty to offer you too.

Description

Srixon is becoming more of a household name with each passing day.  It’s taken a number of years, but the company is now competing with the big dogs like TaylorMade, Callaway, Titleist, and Ping when it comes to golf equipment.

It’s understandable too.  Some of the game’s greatest players are employing Srixon stuff, especially their irons.

In early 2021, the company released the ZX5 irons.  As part of the greater Z85 series, these irons are suitable to the largest demographic of golfers.

Key Features

  • MainFrame variable thickness face design maximizes ball speed and distance.
  • Tour VT sole improves turf interaction for more consistent shots and improved feedback.
  • SUP10 face is lighter than previous models and flexes more at impact to help golfers hit shots farther.

Who Should Buy the Srixon ZX5 irons?

Unlike a lot of irons that are geared toward a specific type of player, the ZX5s can benefit golfers of all different playing abilities.  The company touts these clubs as players’ distance irons.

If you’re someone that wants more consistency and overall improved performance out of your irons, the ZX5s are filled with plenty of technology to help you out.

At the same time, if you prefer a sleek, traditional looking iron, and prioritize playability and feel, these irons have plenty to offer you too.

Srixon ZX5 Irons Detailed Review

Design and Technology

Before you even hit the Srixon ZX5 irons, you’re going to like the way they look.  It starts with a thin top line that looks anything but clunky.  Minimal offset also contributes to the clean, classic look too.

While the design of these clubs is appealing to just about everyone, the technology within is advanced as well.

MainFrame variable face thickness is AI-inspired.  The back of each face is made up of strategically milled channels, grooves, and cavities that work in conjunction to increase ball speed and give golfers more distance throughout the bag.

The sole of the ZX5 irons is one of the most advanced in the game too.  Called VT, these soles have the shape of a “V”.  This design allows the club to glide across the top of the grass without digging.  The front edge isn’t nearly as sharp as previous models.

Notches in the toe and heel also keep the toe and heel from digging into the turf.  This aids in both feel and shot workability, without sacrificing any forgiveness.

Irons four through seven are notably forgiving too.  That’s thanks to high-density tungsten that’s been added in the toe where golfers mishit most of their shots.

In the short irons, eight through pitching wedge, the grooves are sharper, deeper, and narrower.  The result is more spin and control where it matters most.

PROS
  • Compact head and minimal offset look clean and traditional.
  • Exceptional forgiveness thanks to added weight in the toe of the longer irons.
  • MainFrame face design delivers explosive ball speed for increased distance.
CONS
  • Some golfers say the clubs sound loud at impact.
  • For golfers looking for ultimate iron distance, these clubs might not deliver as much as other irons.
  • Limited stock shafts might be a limiting factor for some players.

Specs

A full set of the Srixon ZX5 irons consists of three-iron through pitching wedge.  Also included is a 50-degree approach wedge.

The swing weight is D2 in all the clubs, except the approach wedge which is D3.

The stock steel shaft is the N.S. Pro Modus3 Tour 105.  Flexes are regular and stiff.

For graphite, the ZX5s employ the UST Mamiya Recoil 95.  Both stiff and regular flex are available.

The stock grip is the Golf Pride Tour Velvet 360.

Our Experience

I was lucky enough to hit the ZX5s when they were first released last year.

What I liked most about these irons were their traditional look and consistency.  While a lot of modern game improvement irons can look big, these irons don’t.

They’re also plenty forgiving.  The added weight in the toe of the long irons made them surprisingly easy to hit.  And the short irons were easy to control too.

While I’ve hit other irons that gave me more distance, they didn’t have the soft forged feel that’s afforded with the ZX5s.

On the whole, it’s easy to see how these irons can help golfers of all playing abilities.  They more than deliver on every front.

Conclusion

Modern iron design and technology are constantly evolving.  And there’s a reason why a select few club companies dominate the market – they’re on the cutting edge.  Srixon has quickly become one of those companies and the ZX5 irons are one of their shining examples.

Whether you’re a scratch player looking to maximize the finest of edges, or a weekend warrior that’s new to the game, the Srixon ZX5 irons have something to offer.  But don’t just take our word for it, give them a try for yourself.
