The Sun Mountain Matchplay is one of the best-looking stand bags you can carry, and almost nobody at your course will have one. But there are two different bags with the same name selling at the same time, and here's exactly which one I'd buy.

Is the Sun Mountain Matchplay Stand Bag worth buying?
So here's what's going on. On October 20, 2026, Rock Bottom Golf listed the older single-strap Matchplay at $179.97, against a list price of $399.99. The current Matchplay 4-way and 14-way are newer, dual-strap bags that cost a lot more. Same name. Same look from ten feet away. Not the same bag.
And that matters, because the money you save on the old one buys you back the exact thing Sun Mountain changed: the single strap. So let's break down what's different, which top you actually want, and where this bag falls short.
Quick Overview
- Two generations: the older single-strap Matchplay Stand Bag and the current dual-strap Matchplay 4-way and 14-way.
- Weight: 5.4 lb for the current 4-way and 6.8 lb for the 14-way.
- Materials: Infinity Vinyl with perforated leather accents on the current bag. A Ballistic version swaps in 1680D ballistic nylon.
- Pockets: nine, including a zip-off ball pocket you can customize, a vented cooler pocket, and a magnetic rangefinder pocket on the front.
- Not waterproof: it's water-resistant, but there are no taped zippers on any Matchplay.

This is the current 2026 Matchplay with the full 14-way top, not the 4-way or the Ballistic, sold new by PlayBetter at $425.

This video isn't a Matchplay test. It's my list of the 15 best golf bags of 2026, the Matchplay is on it, and in it I say the version to get is the 14-way top.
The Older Matchplay Isn't the Same Bag as the Current One
The cheap one is the older Matchplay, and it's a different bag in the ways that matter most when you're carrying it.
Here's what changed. The old bag's Premium Duravinyl with one strap and Sun Mountain's roller bottom. The current bag is Infinity Vinyl with perforated leather accents, a dual strap system with a quilted hip pad, and an internal compression bottom, where you press the front edge of the base to kick the legs out. The pockets changed, too. The old bag has dual hydration pouches and a magnetic tee pocket. The new one gets the zip-off ball pocket, a vented cooler pocket, and a front rangefinder pocket.
The big one is the strap. The single strap was the weak spot on the older bag, and the refresh fixed it. Sun Mountain will even sell you a single strap for the new bag as an accessory if you like one strap. It was $30 on Sun Mountain's site on October 20, 2026.
So who should buy the older one? If you ride most rounds or you use a push cart, a single strap barely matters, and saving that kind of money on the same look is a smart move. On October 20, 2026, Rock Bottom Golf listed the older Sun Mountain Matchplay Stand Bag at $179.97 in Black, Navy and Fog, but the page didn't show stock, so make sure your color is actually there.
But if you walk, don't buy it to save money. A single strap over 18 holes is the exact thing the new bag fixed.
The 14-Way Top Is the Version I'd Buy
If you carry a full set, get the 14-way. In my 15 best golf bags of 2026 video, I said the version to get is really the 14-way top, and that's still my pick.
Here's why. The 4-way top is only 7.5 inches across. That's about two inches narrower than the Mid-Stripe bag the Matchplay replaced. The full-length dividers keep your shafts from tangling, but once you've got 13 or 14 clubs in there, it gets tight, and 12 is really the sweet spot. It also has no putter well, so a big putter grip makes it worse.
The 14-way fixes all of that. Every club gets its own full-length slot, so it's organized like a cart bag in a bag you can still carry. ParWest Golf also lists its internal compression bottom as fitting riding and push carts.
The catch is weight. The 14-way is 6.8 lb against the 4-way's 5.4. That's 1.4 lb more on your shoulders. So here's how I'd pick. If you carry 12 or 13 clubs and walk a lot, the 4-way is the lighter, cleaner bag. If you carry all 14, or you just hate digging for clubs, get the 14-way. The price gap between the two is small.

It Looks Like a Much Pricier Bag, and It Still Carries at Walking Weight
This is why you buy a Matchplay. It looks clean and expensive, and you're just not going to see many of them out there.
The current bag's got Infinity Vinyl, perforated leather trim and chrome hardware, and Sun Mountain says its golf bags are assembled at its headquarters in Missoula, Montana. There's no loud branding, and Sun Mountain's site shows seven colors for the 4-way and six for the 14-way. And even with those materials, the 4-way is 5.4 lb, which is a normal walking weight for a stand bag.
The small stuff is good, too. The velour-lined magnetic rangefinder pocket sits right on the front face, which is exactly where you want it. The ball pocket face zips off, so you can customize it. There's a vented cooler pocket, plus a full-length clothing pocket. And the internal compression bottom gives the bag a wide base when it's standing, with legs that tuck back in quickly when you pick it up.
Is the Matchplay leather? No. It's synthetic Infinity Vinyl, trimmed with perforated leather. If you'd rather have nylon than vinyl, the Matchplay Ballistic uses 1680D ballistic nylon at the same 5.4 lb. On October 20, 2026, Sun Mountain listed the Ballistic 4-way Stand Bag at $425 and the Ballistic 14-way Stand Bag at $435.

How the Matchplay Stacks Up
The Matchplay is a looks-first bag, so here's what else I'd look at depending on what you care about most. Prices were checked October 20, 2026.
| Bag | Price | Weight | Why you'd pick it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun Mountain 2026 Matchplay 4-Way Stand Bag | $415 | 5.4 lb | Materials and a look almost nobody else has |
| Vessel Player Air Carbon Stand Bag | $419 | 5.2 lb | Lighter than the Matchplay, wider top, Equilibrium double strap balances the load |
| PING Hoofer Tour Carry Bag | $385 | 6.2 lb | 5-way top and 10 pockets for more storage |
| Jones Rover Stand Bag | $295 | 4.2 lb | Lighter and a lot cheaper if you don't need the premium feel |
If you want the step up in carry comfort, the Vessel Player Air Carbon is the one I'd look at first, and my Vessel Player Air Carbon review covers it in full. It's 5.2 lb with a wider top, and its Equilibrium double strap is built to balance the weight on your shoulders as you walk. If you want more storage, the PING Hoofer Tour gives you a 5-way top and 10 pockets for less money, but it's heavier. And if you just want a light, simple bag for a lot less money, the Jones Rover is only 4.2 lb.
The Matchplay's case is its looks. That's a real reason to buy a bag, just be honest with yourself that it's the reason you're buying it.
What I Don't Love
The stand legs on the vinyl Matchplays don't always fully deploy on the first try. If they don't go all the way out, the bag isn't as stable and it can tip. Give the base a firm press and check the legs before you walk away. The 2026 Ballistic version has this sorted out.
It's not a rain bag. There are no taped zippers, so in a real downpour, water can get in. If you play in the wet a lot, Sun Mountain's own Eclipse and waterproof lines make more sense, and my Sun Mountain Eclipse 2.5 stand bag review is a good place to start.
The straps can run warm in summer because of all that padding, and the strap can squeak now and then. The clothing pocket is tight for more than one layer, too.

This is the current 2026 Matchplay with the full 14-way top, not the 4-way or the Ballistic, sold new by PlayBetter at $425.
Buy on PlayBetterWho It's For
The Matchplay is for golfers who walk or split walking and riding and want a premium-looking bag at a normal carry weight.
Buy it if:
- You walk and want a bag that looks and feels premium without being heavy.
- You carry 12 or 13 clubs (4-way) or want every club in its own slot (14-way).
- You play mostly in dry to moderate weather.
- You ride or push a cart and can grab the older single-strap Matchplay for a lot less.
Skip it if:
- You walk every round and you're thinking about the older single-strap bag to save money.
- You play in the rain a lot and need taped, waterproof zippers.
- You want the lightest carry or the most storage for the money.
If you ride more than you walk, my Sun Mountain C-130 cart bag review covers the cart bag I'd look at, and my Jones Rover stand bag review is the lighter, cheaper carry option.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the price of the Sun Mountain Matchplay 14-way stand bag?
On October 20, 2026, PlayBetter had the Matchplay 14-way stand bag new at $425. Sun Mountain's own site listed it at $374.99, but every color showed sold out or unavailable. The 4-way and the tougher Ballistic versions are priced close to it, and if you ride, Sun Mountain also makes a Matchplay Cart Bag.
Is the Sun Mountain Matchplay bag leather?
No. The current Matchplay is made of Infinity Vinyl, a synthetic material, with perforated leather accents. The older single-strap bag is Premium Duravinyl, and the Matchplay Ballistic body is 1680D ballistic nylon instead.
Is the Sun Mountain Matchplay waterproof?
No. It's water-resistant and it comes with a matching rain hood, but no Matchplay has taped zippers or a waterproof rating. If you play in heavy rain a lot, go with a bag from Sun Mountain's waterproof lines instead.
What's the difference between the old and new Matchplay?
The old Matchplay has a single strap, Premium Duravinyl and a roller bottom. The current one has a dual strap system, Infinity Vinyl with leather accents, an internal compression bottom, new pockets, and six or seven colors depending on the top. Both come with a 7.5-inch 4-way top, and the current bag also comes as a 14-way.
What's the warranty on the Sun Mountain Matchplay?
Sun Mountain warrants its bags against defects in materials and workmanship for one year from the date of purchase. Normal wear and fading aren't covered. For product questions, Sun Mountain's product page lists (800) 227-9224.
Final Thoughts: Sun Mountain Matchplay Stand Bag Review
The Sun Mountain Matchplay sells on its looks, with solid engineering underneath, and it's worth it if that's what you want. If you walk, buy the current dual-strap version, and get the 14-way if you carry all 14 clubs. If you ride, grab the older single-strap one while it's around and keep the difference.
