Shot Scope G5 Golf Watch Review

Product is rated as #49 in category Tech & Training

Over the years, I’ve tried hundreds of golf watches and there’s no question that some stand out more than others. Sure, the super expensive ones that have endless features and functions are cool, but sometimes can be overwhelming. You won’t have that experience with the Shot Scope G5. It’s easy to use, set up, and gives you all the information you need at the touch of your finger. Not to mention it’s modestly priced by comparison. For all the reasons mentioned above, the G5 has my full endorsement. If the Golfer’s Authority staff had to review every golf watch on the market. . . well, let’s just say we’d need to hire a whole lot more people and make it their full-time job.

With that said, we make it a point to review the best watches as quickly as we can once they come out.

And that’s exactly what we’re going to do in today’s review.

Shot Scope is a company that’s newer to the scene than some of the stalwarts you’re probably used to like Bushnell and Garmin.  However, in short order they’ve garnered a reputation as one of the premier brands for golf watches.

The G5 watch is a large part of the reason why and it’s the subject of today’s review.

So, strap in (pun intended).  You’ll see why in a minute.

Key Features

  • Easy customization with two different watch colors and 12 different watch band colors.
  • More than 36,000 preloaded courses eliminate the hassle of downloading new courses.
  • Full-color display is vibrant and easy to read.

Who Should Buy the Shot Scope G5 Golf Watch?

I’ll be the first to admit, there are watches out there with more gizmos and gadgets than the G5.  But that’s not always what everyone wants.

If you’re like me and technology doesn’t always make your life easier, you’re going to appreciate the simplicity of the G5.  It has all the basic functions you need to get accurate yardages out on the course, but none of the frivolous bells and whistles that make things overly complicated.

The fact that this is also one of the most customizable watches out there makes it easy to look good while you’re out on the course as well.

So, if a sleek looking watch that gives you deadly accurate yardages, is easy to use, and doesn’t cost a fortune sounds like a winning combination, the Shot Scope G5 might very well be just what you’re looking for.

Design and Technology

The first thing that jumps off the page to me about the Shot Scope G5 is the fact that it comes with more than 36,000 preloaded courses.  It’s almost inconceivable to me that we now have that kind of technological capability.

In the old days, GPS units made you download a new course every time you went out to play.  And there was always some uncertainty with whether the download would complete or not.

Not anymore with the G5.  All you have to do is show up at a course, turn on the watch, and you’re ready to start playing.

The G5 gives you yardages that are spot on too.  They include numbers to the front, middle, and back of every green, yardages to hazards, dog legs, and other strategic points on every hole.

The watch also allows you to keep score.  This eliminates the trouble of having to keep track of a scorecard and pencil, which can easily fall out of your pocket or off the cart steering wheel.

A lot of distance measuring devices require you to download an app on your smartphone, pair it with the device, and all sorts of other steps.  Setup couldn’t be easier with the G5.  All you have to do is charge it, attach your customized watch strap, and turn the thing.  It’s that simple.

Lastly, there’s ample room for personal customization with the G5.  You can choose from either a gray or black watch, and there are 12 different color watch bands to choose from.  They include classic black, classic white, sky blue, burgundy, mint green, steel gray, carbon gray, army green, navy, orange, pink, and racing red.

Additional features include a last shot measurement feature (see how far you hit your last shot), free firmware updates, a post-round summary that includes how long it took you to play and your score, the ability to switch between yards and meters, a mobile app that enables quick course updates, and no annual subscription fee.

The G5 comes with an industry best two-year warranty.  If for some reason you’re unhappy with the G5, you can return it for a full refund up to 30 days after purchase.

Specs

The lens on the Shot Scope G5 is made of hardened mineral glass, and the buckle from brushed steel.

The G5 weighs just 42 grams and is 44mm wide and 10mm thick.

Display resolution is 176 x 176 pixels.

In GPS mode, a fully charged battery can easily last for two rounds of golf.  In watch mode, you’re looking at north of 10 days.

Our Experience

It wasn’t until this year that I had a chance to try some different products from Shot Scope.  While I’ve been impressed with every single one, the G5 golf watch is one of my favorites.

I’m particularly partial to its seamless setup, ease of use, spot-on accuracy, and ability to be customized.

The G5 isn’t the most high-tech golf watch in the world, but it more than serves its purpose.

Conclusion
