Wilson D9 Driver Review

Updated February 2024 to update current pricing information.

Wilson has a long and storied history as a club manufacturer.  Bad when my grandpa was a young lad, they were one of the premier names in the game.  In fact, my first full set of irons were one his – a set of Wilson Staff Fluid Feels.  I still have them for the record.

Since the glory years, it’s fair to say that Wilson has fallen a bit under the radar.  You don’t hear a lot about their new products and there’s only a handful of players on Tour that play their stuff.

With that being said, they still make quality equipment.  Perhaps their most impressive release in recent memory is this year’s D9 driver.

Key Features

  • CG set low and back in the head gives golfers more forgiveness.
  • Three-layer composite crown reduces mass and limits vibration.
  • The face is divided into fractal zones and incorporates variable thickness, which optimizes performance on strikes across the face.

Who Should Buy the Wilson D9 Driver?

If you’re looking for one of the hotter drivers in 2021, the Wilson D9 isn’t going to disappoint.  This driver’s lightweight design and modern technology work together to provide consistent performance both in terms of distance and forgiveness.

The D9’s price is also attractive for golfers that don’t want to break the bank.

Regardless of your handicap, the Wilson D9 is a solid choice for a driver in 2021.

Wilson D9 Driver Detailed Review

Design and Technology

Wilson isn’t a company that’s going to blow your mind with fancy jargon to describe the new-age tech in their clubs.  Nonetheless, the stuff that makes up the D9 has proven more than worthy in testing, and in the hands of everyday golfers just like you and me.

The talking point of any driver is the face.  The face in the D9 is divided into fractal zones that each have variable thickness that’s designed to produce both maximum distance and forgiveness.  No matter where you catch this drive on the face, it’s going to perform.

The crown consists of three layers that are made of Kevlar and carbon fiber.  The result is the lightest crown Wilson has ever made.  This construction has allowed weight to be moved to other areas in the head where it’s used more efficiently.

According to Wilson, the D9 is the most technologically advanced driver they’ve ever produced.

Our Experience

One of my buddies from the muni just put the Wilson D9 in his bag and he let me hit on the range last time we played.

I have to say, I was impressed with this club’s performance on nearly every level.  True to the company’s claim, the ball jumped off the face.  It also felt undeniably stable through impact.  Is it the best driver I’ve hit in 2021?  Maybe not.  But is it a solid club at a reasonable price?  Absolutely.

I wouldn’t hesitate to put this club in my bag for a second.
