What to Consider When Buying Golf Cart Batteries

Replacing Batteries

Batteries don’t last forever.  It’s said that most last anywhere from three to five years.  However, this depends on how often you use your cart, how it’s stored, and a number of other factors.

You’ll know it’s time to replace your batteries when the amount of time required to charge them becomes longer.

The charge might not last as long either.  Even on a full charge, you might find that you’re only able to get one round of golf out of a charge, instead of two or three.

If your cart is slower to accelerate and lacks the power it once had, it’s a telltale sign your batteries are on their last legs.

Golf cart batteries also show physical signs that they’re about to bite the dust.  More often than not, you’ll notice bulges on the battery’s surface.  This is usually accompanied by acid that leaks out from the terminals.

If you suspect your batteries are failing, a simple voltmeter test will tell everything you need to know.

Once it’s clear you need to replace your golf cart batteries, there are some important things to consider.

Voltage

Most golf cart batteries come in six, eight, or 12 volts.  If you’re unsure what your cart requires, the information will be in your owner’s manual.

Amperage

Amperage refers to a battery’s power capacity.  Expressed as “Ah,” the higher the amperage, the longer a battery can last on a single charge and, the more power you’ll have.

Types of Batteries

Golf cart batteries can be broken down into three categories.

The first is Gel-Lead Acid (GLA) batteries.  These batteries are fully sealed.  If you drive your golf cart on rough terrain, these batteries are preferred as they’re quite durable.

The second type of batteries are wet-cell batteries.  These batteries aren’t sealed and require that you water your batteries every so often to ensure there’s enough electrolytes to keep them running.

The second type of batteries are wet-cell batteries.  These batteries aren’t sealed and require that you water your batteries every so often to ensure there’s enough electrolytes to keep them running.

Terminals and Connections

The last technical factor to consider is how many connections each battery has and, the diameter of your cables.  You’ll want to optimize both these metrics to ensure maximum efficiency from your power bank to keep your batteries from overheating.

Price

Like any other piece of golf equipment, you need to factor in the cost of new batteries too.  With cart batteries, it’s a good idea to pay for a quality product upfront.  Skimping on a cheaper option could prove costly down the road.

Used Batteries

We get it, the sticker shock of used batteries is a real thing.  However, under no circumstances should you ever buy used batteries.  They’re used and for sale for a reason.  Used batteries don’t have any kind of warranty.  Moreover, when they go belly up, you’re going to pay the price for new ones anyway.

Charger

Before you buy new batteries, make sure all the specifications match those of your charger.  This point might seem obvious but, it’s an easy detail to overlook.

Conclusion

Even though owning your own golf cart isn’t going to help you shoot lower scores, it can certainly make the game more fun and easier to play.  It doesn’t get much better than stepping into your garage, jumping in your cart, and heading straight to the first tee.

Your golf cart isn’t a small investment, however.  Even more, it’s one that requires regular upkeep and maintenance to keep it running smoothly.  A key part of that equation is your cart’s batteries.  Eventually, there’s going to come a time when they need to be replaced.  If you’re armed with the right knowledge and do a little research, getting new cart batteries can be simple and easy.
