The Ping G Fairway Wood makes getting the ball airborne from all types of lies easier than ever, and one of the best golf clubs Ping has ever manufactured. It has received a rating of Gold in Golf Digest’s 2016 Hot List and is favored by recreational golfers and Tour professionals alike, including two-time Masters Champion Bubba Watson. Priced on the higher end, the Ping G Fairway Wood packs a formidable punch and is great for golfers who value versatility and playability from tight lies, the rough, and off the tee.

Key Features

  • Higher ball flight is all about lowering the Center of Gravity on a golf club, and the first way the Ping G Fairway Wood achieves this is by making the crown thinner. Less weight at the top drops the center of gravity lower, making it easy to get the golf ball airborne even on thin shots. The Ping G Fairway Wood has also lowered the leading edge compared to its predecessor, the Ping G30. A lower leading edge allows the club to slide the club underneath the ball, further enhancing its high launch capability.
  • The Ping G Fairway Wood has forgone the usual cast 17-4 Stainless Steel for Carpenter 455. Twice as strong as traditional 17-4 stainless, the result is a thinner face which promotes faster, explosive ball speeds, giving you more distance off the tee and from the fairway.
  • Adjustability is a major key for all woods in today’s golf club market, and the Ping G Fairway Wood has five settings, allowing you to change the loft up or down one degree, depending on your liking.

Ping G Fairway Wood Detailed Review

Design and Technology

The Ping G Fairway Wood utilizes an amazing array of advanced technology to help you launch the ball higher with less spin, which are the optimal conditions for maximizing your distance. Ping started with two new features in the crown: thinning the crown and turbulators. By removing weight from the crown and adding it to the sole, the club’s Center of Gravity moves down and back, which is the key to higher launch and low spin. There is also an increase in the Moment of Inertia, making the golf club more forgiving and stable on off-center shots. The turbulators help improve the aerodynamics of the clubhead, increasing clubhead speed by about 1 mile per hour compared to previous models. This has the potential to add 5-7 yards to your fairway woods.

The lower leading edge and low profile on the Ping G Fairway Wood not only helps with getting the ball airborne, it will also inspire confidence from tight and bare lies, but still maintains enough face depth when the ball is teed up, limiting the potential for catching the golf ball on the crown. Another feature added around the leading edge is the Tiered Internal Sole. By varying the thickness level of the sole near the club face, there is more flexing in the face at impact, which promotes more energy into your golf ball, increasing distance without any extra effort on your part.

The clubface is comprised of Carpenter 455 metal, an alloy twice as strong as stainless steel. This metal give the Ping G Fairway Wood one of the hottest faces in golf, providing effortless explosiveness at impact from all lies.

The adjustability emphasizes the effective loft, yet not much in the way of draw/fade bias. This feature will appeal more to the lower-handicap players who utilize setup and swing/plane alterations to make the ball curve as opposed to the club’s address position. If you enjoy the challenge of bending the ball each way without the help of the club, the Ping G Fairway Wood offers unparalleled versatility.

Conclusion

With so many clubs available today, the popularity of the Ping G Fairway Wood speaks volumes to its playability and versatility. From the lower center-of-gravity, more aerodynamic crown design, and scorching hot Carpenter 455 clubface, the Ping G Fairway Wood can quickly become your favorite club off the tee and into those long par-5s. While it doesn’t offer much adjustability for those who prefer a fade/draw biases, the club is built perfectly for a standard high, straight shot.
