Voice Caddie SL Mini Review: A Touch Screen on Your Laser

The SL Mini GPS Rangefinder with Touch Screen is $279.99 through the Golfers Authority offer (regularly $329.99), and it’s a 4.59 ounce laser with a color touch screen running course and green maps on the back of it.

Is the Voice Caddie SL Mini worth buying?

Most golfers carry a laser or a GPS and then spend half the round wanting the other one. A laser gives you a distance to whatever you point it at. A GPS gives you the shape of the hole and where the trouble sits.

The SL Mini puts both into something that weighs 4.59 ounces. You shoot the flag through a 6x optic, then you look at a color touch screen for the layout, the hazard and bunker yardages, the green shape and your pin placement.

So here’s what each half gives you, the limits you’ll want to know before you order, and who I’d send somewhere simpler. If you’re shopping the brand, our best Voice Caddie rangefinders guide covers the rest of the lineup.

The Touch Screen Is What You Don’t Get on a Plain Laser

A laser answers one question. How far is that. The SL Mini answers the rest of the hole on a screen you can tap.

You’ve got the course layout with hazard and bunker yardages, so the bunker you can’t see from the tee carries a number instead of a guess. There’s zoom on the hole and the green, there’s Active Green for the green view, and you can drag the pin to where it actually is today instead of living off front, middle and back.

That’s what changes a course you’ve never played. You shoot the flag for your target distance, then you use the screen to work out whether that’s even the shot you want.

Automatic Slope and a 6x Laser in a 4.59 Ounce Body

The laser side’s straightforward, and that’s a compliment. 6x magnification, high clarity optics, a pin tracer feature, and the reading in an OLED display inside the optic. The maps stay on the touch screen, so you’re not cramming everything into one view.

Slope’s automatic through V-Algorithm 3.0, so you get the adjusted number without flipping a switch. That’s what you want on an uphill shot when your group’s already walking.

And it’s 4.59 ounces at 3.39 by 1.30 by 2.33 inches, recharged over USB-C, so there aren’t any disposable batteries to buy. A rangefinder that drops into a front pocket is one you’ll actually carry.

Green View and Putt View Give You a Read, Not the Read

You’ll either use this half every round or you’ll never open it. There’s an undulation map of the green and a Putt View arrow that shows the break direction, plus shot and putt tracking and a practice tempo mode.

Used right, it’s good. Standing above a green that falls away from you, a picture of the shape tells you which half to miss into, and that’s a scoring decision.

Be realistic about it though. An arrow isn’t reading a six footer with grain and today’s pin in it. Take the shape and the direction, then putt with your eyes.

No Fees Advertised, Which Is Worth More Than It Sounds

Voice Caddie calls the SL Mini completely fee free, and nothing in the product information puts the course and green views behind a membership.

Over a few seasons, that’s real money. Plenty of golf tech sells you a cheap device and then charges you every year for the data that makes it work. If that’s burned you before, this is the reason to look here first.

I’d still confirm it for where you play before you order, for the reason in the next section.

What I Don’t Love

The region limit is the big one. Voice Caddie says the course, green and putt views aren’t available in Europe and some other regions, and tells international buyers to contact them to confirm. So the touch screen half of this purchase depends on where you play. Check that first, because without those views you’ve bought a small slope laser.

Tournament Mode is the other one. It turns off slope and GPS together, not just slope, so the features you paid for are off during your event. I’m not telling you it’s legal for your competition, either. Read your event’s rules yourself.

And there’s no built in magnet. If you were planning to stick it on a cart bar between shots, budget for an accessory or plan on your pocket.

Who It’s For

Buy it if:

  • You want a distance to what you’re aiming at plus course and green maps, without carrying two devices.
  • You play unfamiliar courses and you want hazard and bunker yardages on a screen.
  • You want automatic slope and a 6x optic in something that’s 4.59 ounces and charges over USB-C.
  • You’re done paying a yearly fee for course data, since Voice Caddie advertises none here.

Skip it if:

  • You play in Europe or another region where the course, green and putt views aren’t available.
  • Most of your golf is competition, because Tournament Mode turns off the GPS along with the slope.
  • All you want is a number to the flag, since then you’re paying $279.99 for a screen you won’t open.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Voice Caddie SL Mini have a subscription or yearly fee?

Voice Caddie describes the SL Mini features as completely fee free, and nothing in the product information adds a membership for the course, green or putt views. Confirm it for your region before you order, because those views are region dependent.

Is the SL Mini tournament legal?

It has a Tournament Mode that turns off both slope and GPS. Whether you’re allowed to use it is down to your event’s rules and local conditions, so check those instead of treating a mode name as a ruling.

Does the SL Mini stick to a golf cart?

No. There’s no built in magnet, so putting it on a cart bar needs a separate accessory.

Is the SL Mini the same as the SL3?

No. The SL Mini is its own model, with a color touch screen in a 4.59 ounce body. The Voice Caddie SL3 hybrid is a different unit, so check the model name on whatever page you’re buying from.

Will the green map read my putt for me?

No. It gives you the green’s undulation and an arrow for the break direction. That’s shape and general direction, and you’ve still got to read the putt yourself.

Final Thoughts: Voice Caddie SL Mini Review

At $279.99, a 6x laser with automatic slope plus tappable course and green maps and no fees advertised is a strong package, and the pin placement and the hazard yardages are what I’d use every round. Do one thing first. Confirm the course, green and putt views work where you play, because that’s the half that justifies paying this over a plain slope laser. If you compete most weekends, or all you ever want is the number to the flag, buy something simpler and keep the difference.
