I watch a lot of golf on television. Every weekend my mind is boggled by how talented the best players in the world are. Sure, Bryson, DJ, JT, Rory, and so many more marvel us with booming drives and towering iron shots. But it’s the short game where the top guys make their money. What’s a Chipper?
Chippers look just like a putter. They’re the same length and have the same style head. The biggest difference is that they have the loft of a short iron.
Because of their design, they’re meant to be used just like a putter. No opening the clubface, changing ball position, or having to use your hands. Just take your normal putting stance, and rock your shoulders. The loft of the club will carry the ball onto the green and have it rolling like a putt every time.

What Should You Consider When Buying a Chipper?
Just like any other piece of golf equipment, you need to be sure you’re making the best purchase for your game. As such, there are a number of considerations you should take into account before you swipe your credit card.
Cost
Buying a chipper isn’t the same thing as buying a new TaylorMade driver. But cost is still worth considering.
Like anything else, you get what you pay for in most cases. Are you a casual golfer that only plays a few times a year? Then you don’t need to spend an arm and a leg. But if you play a lot of golf and want your chipper to last, the extra few bucks might be worth it.
Loft, Length, and Lie Angle
Making sure your equipment fits your swing is essential to playing your best golf. While chipper fitting isn’t as intricate fittings for your other clubs, there are some specs you should pay attention to.
The first is loft. Most of us grew up learning the “bump and run” chip shot with a seven or eight iron. Chippers are typically designed with similar lofts between 37 and 45 degrees. Before you buy, experiment with some different lofts to see which one allows you to hit the shots you’re looking for.
Length is the next thing to think about. Golfers come in all different shapes and sizes. Having the proper length clubs is a must. When deciding the length of chipper that’s best for you, it should be one that allows your arms to hang comfortably in the address position. You don’t want to feel like you’re reaching for the ball, and you also don’t want to feel crowded.
Lastly, the lie angle should be such that your chipper sits flush with the turf when you put it behind the ball. Too upright and you’ll catch shots off the toe. Too flat and your mishits will be off the heel.
Look, Feel, and Sound
The most important factor to consider when buying a chipper is how it looks, feels, and sounds when it’s in your hands. It should inspire confidence.
Even if you find a chipper that’s perfectly fit for you, if you don’t like something about it, it’s not going to do you much good.
