The Sun Mountain Monsoon is $99.99, the seams are sealed, and it packs into its own pocket. For a passing shower, it’s the cheap rain jacket I’d keep in the bag.
Is the Sun Mountain Monsoon Jacket worth buying?
Sun Mountain’s pitch for the Monsoon is pretty simple. A waterproof golf jacket with fully sealed seams, a 15K-rated membrane and a 2-year waterproof guarantee, for a hundred bucks. A lot of rain jackets that check those boxes list for about twice that.
And here’s what I like. Sun Mountain doesn’t oversell it. In its own fall rain-jacket guide, it calls the Monsoon a packable jacket for showers and on-and-off rain. Not a storm shell. That’s a brand telling you exactly what job it built the jacket for, and it’s the job I’d buy it for too.
So here’s what you get for $99.99, how much rain it’s really built for, and when you should spend more.
Quick Overview
- It’s $99.99 at Sun Mountain and PGA TOUR Superstore, with no inflated “was” price.
- Every seam is sealed, and Sun Mountain rates the membrane at 15K.
- It folds into its own pocket, so it can live in your bag all season.
- The fabric has mechanical stretch and is built to stay quiet when you swing.
- You get a 2-year waterproof guarantee, but this version doesn’t have a hood.

Sealed Seams for $99.99 Is the Whole Reason to Buy It
Here’s the thing a lot of cheap rain jackets get wrong. The fabric can be waterproof all day long, but water gets in through the stitching. Every seam is a row of tiny needle holes. Sun Mountain seals every seam on the Monsoon, and when it keeps raining, that matters more than the membrane number does.
The membrane is rated 15K. Sun Mountain doesn’t say how it tests that, but 15K is a normal mid-range number for a golf rain jacket. The Callaway Stormguard III is listed at 15,000 mm too, and that one can run $249.95 at full retail.
Then there’s a DWR finish on the outside. That’s the coating that makes water bead up and roll off instead of soaking into the fabric. Just know DWR wears down with use and washing, and that’s true on a cheap jacket or an expensive one.
So for a hundred bucks, you’re getting the three parts that actually keep you dry. A waterproof membrane, sealed seams and a water-repellent face. What you’re not paying for is a big-name laminate, because Sun Mountain doesn’t name one.
It Packs Into Its Own Pocket, So It’s Actually in Your Bag When It Rains
The best rain jacket is the one in your bag. Sounds obvious. But a ton of golfers own a good rain jacket that’s hanging in the closet at home when the weather turns on the 7th hole.
The Monsoon stows inside its own pocket and can clip to your bag. So you stuff it in the apparel pocket in March and forget about it until you need it. That’s the whole job.

I’m in Arizona, so rain isn’t something I deal with every week. When I did my Galway Bay rain gear video, I had to fake the rain with sprinklers and a hose in my backyard. If you play somewhere like that, you don’t need a $300 jacket. You need one that’s there on the one day the forecast is wrong, and that’s exactly what this is built for.
It also has the little stuff right. The zip-through collar has a storm flap behind the zipper, so water isn’t running straight through the front. And the hand-warmer pockets zip shut with flaps over them, so your glove, scorecard and phone stay dry.

The Stretch and Quiet Fabric Keep It Out of Your Swing
Old-school rain jackets were stiff and crinkly. You’d hear them on every backswing. Sun Mountain built the Monsoon with mechanical stretch, which means the stretch comes from how the fabric is woven, not from spandex mixed in. And Sun Mountain describes the fabric as soft and quiet.
That matters more than people think. A noisy jacket is one of those things you don’t notice in the store and can’t stop noticing on the course. Swish, every swing.
The fit helps too. There’s a partial elastic waist and elastic cuffs, so the hem stays put and the sleeves aren’t flopping around your hands at address. It’s simple.
The 2-Year Waterproof Guarantee Makes the Math Easy
Let’s do the math out loud. $99.99 for a jacket Sun Mountain guarantees waterproof for 2 years. That’s about $50 a year. Zippers, hems and seams are covered for 1 year on top of that.
The one thing you have to do is keep the receipt or register the jacket, because Sun Mountain needs one of those for a claim, and normal wear isn’t covered. So when it shows up, register it.
Now compare that with what else is out there. Inside Sun Mountain’s own line, the Monsoon is the entry jacket. The Sun Mountain Stratus is $179.99 and the Sun Mountain Cirque II is $329.99.
The FootJoy HydroLite X is a more technical 2.5-layer jacket, and it’s $225, or $195 at PGA TOUR Superstore. So the Monsoon is the cheap way in, and for a golfer who wears rain gear a handful of times a year, it’s the right one to start with.

What I Don’t Love
There’s a catch. There’s always a catch. This is a shower jacket. Sun Mountain says so themselves. If you play 18 in cold, steady rain where you live, the Monsoon isn’t built for that day, and I wouldn’t buy it hoping it is.
There’s also no hood. On this version, the zip collar is all you’ve got protecting your neck. The Monsoon Hooded Jacket is $109.99, so it’s ten bucks more. If it rains a lot where you play, I’d just spend the ten.
And you don’t get much to go on. Sun Mountain doesn’t publish a breathability rating, a weight or what the fabric is made of. So you’re trusting the 15K, the sealed seams and the guarantee. If you run hot under a shell, breathability is the number I’d want, and it isn’t there.
Last thing, check your size and color before you fall for one. When I checked, Black and Arctic Ice were available in every size, but a couple of the other colors were down to one size.
Who It’s For
Buy it if:
- You mostly play in decent weather and want a waterproof jacket in the bag for when it isn’t.
- You don’t want to spend $200 on something you’ll wear a handful of times a year.
- You walk or carry and want a jacket that folds up small and rides in the bag.
- You want sealed seams and a written waterproof guarantee for under $100.
Skip it if:
- You play through cold, all-day rain. Look at the Sun Mountain Stratus at $179.99 instead.
- You want a hood. Get the Monsoon Hooded Jacket instead.
- You want a stretchy wind layer for cold, dry rounds. That’s Sun Mountain’s $250 Torren, and it’s a different jacket for a different job.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Sun Mountain Monsoon jacket waterproof?
Yes. It has a 15K-rated waterproof membrane, fully sealed seams and a DWR finish, and Sun Mountain guarantees it waterproof for 2 years. Just know what it’s built for. Sun Mountain pitches it for rain showers, not all-day downpours.
Does the Sun Mountain Monsoon jacket have a hood?
No. This one has a zip-through collar with an inner storm flap, and that’s it. If you want a hood, get the Monsoon Hooded Jacket. It’s $109.99.
Is the Sun Mountain Monsoon jacket breathable?
Sun Mountain calls it breathable, but it doesn’t publish a breathability rating, so there’s no number to go on. If you run hot or play a lot of warm, wet rounds, that’s the one spec I’d want before buying, and Sun Mountain doesn’t give it to you.
How much does the Sun Mountain Monsoon jacket weigh?
Sun Mountain doesn’t list a weight. It just calls the jacket feather light. What you do know is it packs into its own pocket, so it’s built to ride in your bag without you thinking about it.
Should I get the Sun Mountain Monsoon or the Stratus?
Get the Monsoon if you want a jacket for showers and the odd wet round and you want to keep it around $100. The Sun Mountain Stratus is the next step up in the rain line, at $179.99. If you play in the rain a lot, that’s the one I’d look at.
Final Thoughts: Sun Mountain Monsoon Jacket Review
If you want a waterproof jacket in the bag for the days the weather turns, the Monsoon is an easy buy at $99.99. If real rain is a regular thing where you play, put the extra $80 toward the Stratus. And if you want the full rain suit, pants and all, my Galway Bay rain gear review is a good next read.
