Foresight GC2 vs. SkyTrak+: Which Launch Monitor Should You Buy?

The Foresight GC2 is $1,699, and the SkyTrak+ is $1,195 at PlayBetter right now. I’ve used both, and the right one comes down to one thing: where you’re going to hit balls.

The Quick Verdict

If you practice outdoors and at the range, get the Foresight GC2. It read within two yards of a TrackMan on my 7-iron, it has a screen right on the unit that I could read in the Arizona sun, and it’s a 4.5-pound unit with a handle that you grab and go with.

But if your launch monitor is going to live in your garage simulator, the SkyTrak+ is the better deal right now. At $1,195 it’s $504 cheaper than the GC2, it gives you club path and face to target, which the GC2 doesn’t measure at all, and its basic software is free. Indoors, the numbers on mine were dead on.

They Solve the Same Problem, in Very Different Ways

Both of these sit right beside the ball, so neither one needs a deep room behind you like a radar unit does. The GC2 uses two high-speed cameras. The SkyTrak+ pairs dual Doppler radar with a camera system.

Both work indoors and outdoors on paper. Both give you free basic software, so you can see your numbers without paying a membership. And both can play Foresight’s courses, because SkyTrak offers a Core plan with Foresight Sports software.

But where they work best, what they measure and what they cost are very different, so let’s go through it.

The GC2 Is the One I’d Take to the Range

This is the biggest difference between these two.

When I took the SkyTrak+ to the range with my golf instructor Gary, we hit off a mat, and the mat slipping made the backspin numbers inconsistent. The carry looked dead on. But most of the ranges out here in Arizona are real grass, not mats, and if I don’t have a mat, I don’t know if I’d be bringing the SkyTrak+ out to the range.

The GC2 is built for the range bag. It’s 4.5 pounds with a handle built right into the unit, it runs on a built-in battery, and it connected to my phone in about five seconds. I’ve used mine outdoors in my net, in my simulator and at the range, with zero misreads. And the 2.8-inch color screen was crisp and clear in the Arizona sun, so I’m not looking at my phone after every shot.

So if you’re practicing outside, the GC2 is the easy call.

The SkyTrak+ Gives You Club Data, the GC2 Doesn’t

Here’s where the SkyTrak+ pulls ahead. It measures club data. On mine it showed face to target and club path, and those numbers looked pretty dead accurate.

The GC2 measures ball data only. No club speed, no smash factor, no club path, no face angle, and there’s no Foresight+ tier you can pay for that adds it.

Neither one measures angle of attack, so if that’s the number you care about most, you’re looking at a different launch monitor.

Now, the GC2’s ball numbers are the real deal. Mine matched a TrackMan mounted right above my head to two yards. So if you mostly care about carry, ball speed, launch and spin, you’re not giving up accuracy with the GC2. You’re giving up the club numbers.

Price: The SkyTrak+ Is $504 Cheaper Than the GC2 Right Now

At PlayBetter, the SkyTrak+ is $1,195, and that listing comes with a year of Foresight course play. SkyTrak’s own store still has it at $1,995 new. The GC2 is $1,699. So at PlayBetter, you’re saving $504 with the SkyTrak+.

The memberships are where you have to pay attention. On the SkyTrak+, the Basic plan is free and includes a practice range, so there’s no subscription required just to hit balls. Essential is $129.99 a year, Core with Foresight Sports software is $299.99, Core with Trackman software is $349.99, and Elite with both is $599.99.

On the GC2, the free tier gives you your numbers and ten saved sessions. Silver is $199 a year, Gold is $599, and to play Foresight’s courses you need a Course Pass on top of Silver or Gold. The cheapest course setup is $494 a year. I ran Gold and played the Foresight courses, and they’re phenomenal. But Gold with the full course library, Course Pass Pro, is $1,194 a year.

So if the plan is a garage simulator where you play courses every night, the SkyTrak+ gets you there for less.

What I Don’t Love About Each

Both of these have a catch, and when you’re spending $1,195 or more, you should know it before you buy.

Foresight GC2

The bill after you buy it if you want to play courses, which is $494 a year at the cheapest, and no club data at any price. The hitting area also took me a minute. I had to figure out exactly where the ball needed to sit, but once I found that spot it wasn’t that noticeable.

SkyTrak+

Without a mat, I don’t know if I’d bring it to the range. And even on one, the mat slipped and made the backspin numbers inconsistent. There’s no screen on the unit, so your numbers live in the app. And it doesn’t measure angle of attack.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Foresight GC2 better than the SkyTrak+?

It depends where you’ll use it. For the range and outdoor practice, the GC2 is better: it has a screen on the unit, it’s easy to carry, and on my 7-iron it was two yards off a TrackMan. For an indoor simulator, I’d take the SkyTrak+ at $1,195, and it measures club data.

Can you take the SkyTrak+ to the range?

You can, but I hit mine off a mat at the range, so bring one. Indoors, the numbers were dead on accurate for me.

Does the Foresight GC2 measure club data like the SkyTrak+?

No. It’s ball data only on the GC2, and no Foresight+ tier adds club data. The SkyTrak+ measures club data, including club path. Angle of attack isn’t on either one.

Which is cheaper, the GC2 or the SkyTrak+?

The SkyTrak+, at $1,195 at PlayBetter against $1,699 for the GC2. SkyTrak’s own store lists the SkyTrak+ at $1,995 new, so where you buy it matters.

Do you need a subscription for the GC2 or the SkyTrak+?

Not to see your numbers. The GC2 has a free tier with ten saved sessions, and the SkyTrak+ Basic plan is free with a practice range. To play courses, the GC2 needs Silver or Gold plus a Course Pass, and the SkyTrak+ needs a paid plan such as Core with Foresight Sports software at $299.99 a year.

Final Thoughts on Foresight GC2 vs SkyTrak+

If you hit balls outside and at the range, get the GC2. If your launch monitor is staying in the garage and you want club data for less money, get the SkyTrak+ at $1,195. If you’re still weighing the whole category, my best launch monitors list covers every one I’d buy, and my full Foresight GC2 review and SkyTrak+ review go deeper on each.
