Sun Mountain E-2.5 Stand Bag Review: Light Enough for Walkers?

The new Sun Mountain E-2.5 is $290, and at 4.4 pounds it’s the lightest bag in the 2027 E-Series. If you walk most of your rounds, it’s the one in the family I’d start with.

Is the Sun Mountain E-2.5 Stand Bag worth buying?

OK, first thing. There are two Sun Mountain E-2.5 bags on Sun Mountain’s website right now, and they’re not the same bag.

On October 1, 2026, Sun Mountain dropped the Eclipse name from its new stand bags and started calling them the E-Series. So the new one, the one in this review, is just the E-2.5. The old one is the Eclipse E-2.5, and Sun Mountain still sells it. Same number on the bag, $66 apart. If you’re shopping the old one, that’s my Sun Mountain Eclipse 2.5 stand bag review.

And the new E-2.5 didn’t launch alone. It came out with the E-3.5 and the E-4.5 VLO, and all three are within $25 of each other. So the real question isn’t whether it’s a good bag. It’s which of the three you should be walking with. There’s no hands-on review of the 2027 bags out yet, and I haven’t had one out myself, so this is what’s on paper and where I’d put my money.

Quick Overview

  • It’s $290 at Sun Mountain, and the old Eclipse E-2.5 is $224 on the same site.
  • At 4.4 pounds, it’s the lightest of the three new E-Series bags.
  • You get a 7.75-inch 4-way top, four full-length dividers and nine pockets.
  • A new Ergonomic Dual Strap System replaces the X-Fit strap from the Eclipse bags.
  • There are 16 colors, and the left-handed version is the same $290 in Black.

At 4.4 Pounds, It’s the Lightest Bag in the New E-Series

Let’s get the name out of the way. The E-2.5 doesn’t weigh 2.5 pounds. It’s 4.4. The number sounds like a weight, but it’s just the model.

Now, 4.4 pounds is still light for a full-size stand bag with nine pockets. And inside the new family, it’s the lightest one by a good margin. The E-3.5 is 5.0 pounds. The E-4.5 VLO comes in at 5.9. So you’re carrying a pound and a half less than the biggest bag in the lineup, and that’s a pound and a half on your shoulder for 18 holes.

If you walk, that’s the whole reason to look at this bag. In my 7 lightest golf bags video, the first thing I asked was whether you ever leave clubs at home to make walking the course easier. A lot of walkers do. This isn’t that kind of bag. It’s for the guy who wants to carry a real set and still have the bag feel light coming up the 18th.

Nine Pockets and a 7.75-Inch Top Are Plenty for a Walker

The top is a 4-way, 7.75 inches across, with four dividers that run the full length of the bag. That’s a quarter inch wider than the Eclipse E-2.5. Full-length dividers matter more than people think. Your grips don’t tangle down at the bottom, and a club comes out without dragging the one next to it.

Then you’ve got nine pockets, and they’re the right nine for a walker. There’s a magnetic rangefinder pocket lined with snow fur, so you’re not zipping and unzipping it every hole. There’s a fur-lined valuables pocket for your phone and keys. A cooler-lined bottle holder for summer. A ball pocket with a removable face you can customize. And an internal key clip and a glove attachment, which are the kind of little things you only miss when they’re not there.

Sun Mountain lists the capacity at 24.6 liters, up from 17.9 on the Eclipse E-2.5. That’s a big jump for a quarter inch of top and two tenths of a pound. It’s also the exact number Sun Mountain gave last year’s 14-way Eclipse E-4.5 VLO. So I’d want to see one filled up before I counted on all that extra room.

Either way, here’s how I’d think about it. Rangefinder, a sleeve of balls, a layer, a bottle and your phone? Nine pockets handle that easily. If you pack a full rain suit and lunch for every round, the E-3.5 gives you two more pockets for $10.

The Stand Carries Over From the Eclipse, and the Strap Is All New

Sun Mountain kept the internal compression bottom from the Eclipse bags. That’s the hinged base that kicks the legs out when you set the bag down. It’s not new, and that’s a good thing. It’s the part of the old bag Sun Mountain didn’t need to fix.

The strap is a different story. The Eclipse bags used the X-Fit strap, and the new E-Series gets what Sun Mountain calls an all-new Ergonomic Dual Strap System. That’s about all Sun Mountain has said about it. There’s no breakdown of the padding or how it adjusts.

For a walker, that’s the most important part of the bag. A light bag with a bad strap still beats you up on the back nine. So here’s my advice. Buy it from Sun Mountain direct. Shipping’s free over $150 and US returns are free. Load it up at home with your actual set, carry it around for 20 minutes, and if the strap isn’t right, send it back.

The rest is easy. The body is 300D polyester, there are 16 colors, and the lefty version is the same $290, in Black.

The Real Decision Is $10 Between the E-2.5 and the E-3.5

All three E-Series bags launched together, and they’re closer than you’d think. Here’s the ladder.

The E-2.5 is $290. It weighs 4.4 pounds and has nine pockets.

The Sun Mountain E-3.5 is $300. That extra $10 gets you two more pockets, 2.8 more liters, and a top that’s 0.75 inches wider at 8.5 inches. It’s still a 4-way with four dividers, and it’s 0.6 pounds heavier.

The Sun Mountain E-4.5 VLO is $315 and 5.9 pounds. That’s the one with the 14-way top, 14 full-length dividers and the VLO features for push carts and riding carts.

So the E-2.5’s whole case inside its own family is weight. You carry 0.6 pounds less than the E-3.5, you give up two pockets, and you keep $10. If you walk every round, I’d take that trade. If you travel with your bag or carry a lot of layers, pay the $10 for the E-3.5. And if you’re on a push cart or riding most of the time, skip both and go straight to the E-4.5 VLO. If you’re not sure how many dividers you even need, my 5-way vs. 14-way golf bag breakdown walks through it.

What I Don’t Love

Here’s my problem with this bag. It’s $66 more than the bag it replaces, and on paper the old one wins a couple of things a walker cares about.

The Eclipse E-2.5 is $224 on Sun Mountain’s own site. It’s 4.2 pounds, so the old bag is actually 0.2 pounds lighter than the new one. And Sun Mountain’s Eclipse page lists a rain hood. The new E-2.5 page doesn’t. Maybe it’s in the box. I’d plan like it isn’t until you see one.

Then there’s the top. Four dividers is fine with 12 clubs, maybe 13. With 14, a 4-way is going to be tight, and a quarter inch wider than last year isn’t a lot of help.

Now, $66 over five seasons of 40 rounds is 33 cents a round. If you want the new strap, the new colors and that bigger listed capacity, that’s not much. But if you just want a good walking bag for less, the old Eclipse is the value play. Grab it while Sun Mountain still has it.

Who It’s For

Buy it if:

  • You walk most of your rounds and carry 12 clubs, maybe 13.
  • You want the lightest bag in the new E-Series and you’re fine giving up two pockets to save $10 on the E-3.5.
  • You want the new strap and the 2027 colors over a marked-down outgoing bag.
  • You’re a lefty. The left-handed version is the same $290, in Black.

Skip it if:

  • You push a cart or ride most rounds, or you want every club in its own slot. Get the E-4.5 VLO.
  • You want the best deal on a Sun Mountain walking bag. Get the $224 Eclipse E-2.5.
  • You count every ounce. The Eclipse E-1.5 is $280 and lighter still.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Sun Mountain E-2.5 weigh 2.5 pounds?

No. Sun Mountain lists it at 4.4 pounds. The 2.5 is just the model number. You still save 0.6 pounds over the E-3.5 and 1.5 pounds over the biggest bag in the family.

What’s the difference between the Sun Mountain E-2.5 and the Eclipse E-2.5?

They’re two different bags. The one without Eclipse in the name is the new 2027 model, at $290. The Eclipse version is last year’s bag, and you can still get it from Sun Mountain for $224. The new one has a wider 7.75-inch top, a new strap and more listed capacity. The old one is 0.2 pounds lighter, uses the X-Fit strap and lists a rain hood.

Does the Sun Mountain E-2.5 come with a rain hood?

Sun Mountain’s product page doesn’t list one. The Eclipse E-2.5 page does. So if a rain hood matters to you, don’t count on one until you see it in the box.

Should I get the Sun Mountain E-2.5 or the E-3.5?

If you walk every round, get the E-2.5. It’s 0.6 pounds lighter and $10 cheaper. If you travel with your bag or pack extra clothes, the E-3.5 is worth the $10 for two more pockets and an 8.5-inch top. Both have the same four dividers.

Does the Sun Mountain E-2.5 work on a push cart?

It doesn’t have Sun Mountain’s VLO features, so it isn’t built for one. If you push a cart or ride most rounds, the E-4.5 VLO is the bag in this family made for that, with a 14-way top. It’s $315.

Final Thoughts: Sun Mountain E-2.5 Stand Bag Review

If you walk most of your rounds and you want Sun Mountain’s new E-Series, the E-2.5 is the one I’d buy. It’s $290, and it’s the lightest of the three. Just buy it direct and try the strap with your own set before you keep it. If the $66 matters more to you than a new strap, buy the old Eclipse and don’t look back. And if you want to see what else is out there for walkers, my best stand bags roundup is the next read.
