Description

The flop shot.  It’s something you’ve probably tried at some point.  The reality is, however, very few golfers are able to pull this shot off with any degree of consistency.  If you’re like me, you’ve probably skulled it over the green, chunked in the bunker, or gone right under it completely.

The best players in the world make this shot look easy.  But they also practice it for hours on end.

For mere mortals like you and me, it’s scary to say the least.  Even if you’re using your most lofted wedge.

The good news is that this shot doesn’t have to be as intimidating as it once was.  That’s thanks to the H7 Hummingbird Wedge.  This wedge measures 70 degrees of loft and was designed specifically for this shot.

Key Features

  • Ultra-wide AirX sole allows the club to glide through the grass from any lie.
  • 70 degrees of loft mean you don’t have to open the clubface at address.
  • Upright lie angle fits almost any chipping style.

H7 Hummingbird Wedge Detailed Review

Design and Technology

There’s a lot more behind the design of the H7 Hummingbird Wedge than just added loft.

To start, the AirX sole is significantly wider than the soles of other premium lob wedges.  This keeps the leading edge from digging into the turf while also allowing the club to slide smoothly through the grass.  In short, it provides plenty of relief on both fat and thin shots.

The lie angle is significantly more upright too.  While you have to squat down and move farther from the ball with most traditional lob wedges, such isn’t the case with the H7.  You’re able to remain close to your work for added consistency and control.

The face also features an alignment aid that lets you know exactly where the club is pointing.  All too often you’re left guessing with traditional wedges.

The clubface is oversize as well.  This increases MOI for more forgiveness.  With this wedge, you’ll find that shots off the heel and toe are penalized much less.

Our Experience

One of the guys in my weekly grip showed up at the first tee the other day grinning from ear to ear.  He’s generally a gregarious guy, but I could tell he was really excited about something.

It didn’t take long before he started telling us all about the new H7 Hummingbird Wedge he’d put in his bag.

Even though most of us had never heard of the Hummingbird Wedge, his reviews were pretty convincing.  The proof was in the pudding.  This guy isn’t a great player and tends to miss a lot of greens.

On this particular day, he found himself short-sided on a number of occasions and was able to get the ball close to the hole with his new H7 wedge.

What struck me was how easy this club was for him to use.  He didn’t make any abnormal adjustments to his setup and swung using his regular motion.  Time and again, the ball came out high and soft, and only rolled a few inches when it landed.

After our round, I spent a few minutes fooling around with it on the practice green.  I was amazed at how easy it was to hit.  The only part that took some getting used to was swinging a little harder because of all the added loft.

Conclusion

We’ve all dreamed about hitting flop shots like Phil Mickelson.  The truth is that only a fraction of the golfing population can pull it off successfully.

Thankfully, the H7 Hummingbird wedge takes the guesswork out of this shot and allows amateurs like you and I to execute the flop shot with ease.

If you’re looking to add a weapon to your short game and don’t have hours to spend perfecting it in practice, give the H7 Hummingbird Wedge a try.  It takes a little getting used to, but we think you’ll be impressed with the results.
