Titleist ProV1 and ProV1x Golf Balls Review

Description

The Titleist ProV1 and ProV1x golf balls have become synonymous with exceptional performance. Although these golf balls are well-known, some common questions arise when player begin to consider if spending upwards of $50 for 12 golf balls is truly worth it. First, what is the difference between the ProV1 and ProV1x? Secondly, is the newest model really different than the prior generation? Finally, even if the newest model is different, is the best value coming to me in purchasing the prior generations as long as they are still available? Thanks to our friends over at Two Guys with Balls, this article will tackle these questions and hopefully help you find the best ProV for your game.

Key Benefits of the ProV1 and ProV1x

  • Both styles feature Drop-and-StopTM greenside control and exceptional distances with every club in your golf bag.
  • The ProV1 features a slightly softer profile than the ProV1x.
  • When compared with each other, the ProV1 typically offers slightly lower launches, and higher spin than the ProV1x’s high launch, low spin.

ProV1 and ProV1x Detailed Review

Design and Technology

The newest iteration of the ProV1 and ProV1x golf balls have 17% thinner covers for more short game control. Each internal layer has been specifically engineered to enhance speed and separate spin for each golf club in your bag – less spin with your driver and more spin you’re your wedges. The core of both golf balls has been reconfigured to create more speed at every club head speed and lead to more distance.

2019 vs. 2017 Models

The 2019 ProV1 and ProV1x models offer slight differences when compared to the 2017 offerings. Apart from the visual difference (grey arrows compared to black arrows); the 2019 golf balls play slightly differently. In general, the 2019 offerings control spin around the green with more consistency and offer slightly softer feel in both the ProV1 and ProV1x models. In blind testing, the four different profiles were almost indistinguishable in terms of launch or spin.

Each time a new model of the ProV1 and ProV1x is released, some performance differences are noted. However, from our testing, it appears that these differences are not always enough to justify paying more for the newest model. While I am confident in saying that golfers will not lose anything by switching to the newest model of the ProV1 or ProV1x, I am also confident that golfers will find value in choosing the lower priced option without sacrificing their scores.

Our Experience

The ProV1 and ProV1x golf balls are without question some of the top performing golf balls available. It would be misleading to describe either golf ball as bad for any golfer. However, it is obvious through our testing that there are some significant differences that exist among these two golf balls and that they can be used in very different ways to help your game. The ProV1x is slightly firmer than the ProV1 and will be well suited to golfers that prefer more pronounced feedback. As a general rule, the ProV1 golf ball launches slightly lower and spins more with longer clubs including fairway woods and long irons. The ProV1x can help players reduce spin and increase launch in the upper and middle parts of their golf bags. With the driver, there is little difference among these golf balls although for some it is possible to see the ProV1x launching higher, spinning less, and leading to slightly more distance, especially at very high swing speeds.

  • ProV1 and ProV1x tailor to golfers of slightly different ball flight and feel preferences without sacrificing performance.
  • Prior generation ProV1 and ProV1x models can offer similar levels of performance with reduced prices.
CONS
  • Even at the reduced price of roughly $40 per dozen, the older model ProV1 and ProV1x golf balls are expensive.
  • Without a complete golf ball fitting, the differences in the two golf balls are difficult to separate in anything other than feel.
  • Some direct to consumer golf ball options may offer similar levels of performance at a better price.

Conclusion

The ProV1 and ProV1x golf ball continue to be the standard in high performance. Both models offer a unique playing profile to different kinds of golfers. We would always advise players to be fit for their golf ball and use the same model every time they go out. General rules when comparing the ProV1 and ProV1x golf ball can be condense as: the ProV1 is softer, launches slightly lower and spins slightly more; the ProV1x is firmer, launcher higher, and spins less.
