If you’ve read many of our equipment reviews in the past, you’ve probably noticed we’ve reviewed a lot of Mizuno’s stuff.  That’s because they make some of the finest golf equipment in the world.  A lot of our staff play their clubs, and our readers love their stuff too.

Even though the JPX921 Hot Metal Irons are a couple years old, we’ve received a lot of positive feedback about them.  So much so, that we thought we’d share what we’ve learned with the rest of you, our Golfer’s Authority Family.

More and more golfers are switching to Mizuno irons, even though they’re traditionally known as a “player’s” brand.  That’s because the Hot Metal Line is tailored to players looking for more distance and forgiveness.

The JPX 921s are the hottest in the line yet. .

Key Features

  • Reengineered CORETECH face is 0.2 mm thinner than the previous model and produces faster ball speeds and more distance.
  • Seamless Cup Face Design allows the face to flex more at impact for increased ball speeds.
  • Stability Frame Design puts added weight in the perimeter of the clubhead for added stability through impact.

Design and Technology

Ever since Mizuno began making golf clubs, they’ve had a reputation for making some of the sexiest looking sticks in the game.

Aesthetically, the JPX921s definitely live up to that reputation.  At first glance, these clubs look like a far cry from a lot of other game improvement irons.  Instead of bright colors and loud logos, the Pearl-Brush Finish is clean and classic.  The finish keeps the sun out of your eyes too thanks to its anti-glare properties.

At address, these irons scream “hit me” with their large head profile, prominent top line, wide sole, and noticeable offset.  They’re certainly a far cry from the butter knife blades Mizuno’s been making for years.

With each generation of the Hot Metal Irons, Mizuno perfects it’s Chromology design more and more.  In the JPX921s, it starts with a Coretech face that’s 0.2mm thinner than the previous iron.  You guessed it, that means faster ball speeds and more distance.

Cup Face Design employs a variable thickness sole that allows the leading edge to act like a hinge, and the face to flex.  Yep, that spells faster ball speeds too.

If there’s one thing Mizuno has perfected more than any other manufacturer, it’s making irons that sound and feel exquisite.  Unlike a lot of game improvement irons that sound loud and feel clunky, the JPX921s are as responsive as anything you’ll find.  That’s due to Harmonic Impact Design that features three additional sound ribs placed behind the clubface.  Both noise and vibration are dampened.

And talk about stability.  There’s no shortage of it in the JPX921 Irons.  Compared to previous irons in the Hot Metal Line, a substantial amount of weight has been moved from the club’s center to its perimeter, with added toe-bias.  This reduces curvature on off-center strikes and lessens the amount of distance lost.

Suffice it to say, the JPX921s employ the latest and greatest in both design and technology to help golfers hit their irons farther, higher, and more consistently.

Our Experience

I’ve hit just about every Mizuno club in existence at some point or another.  And I’ll be the first to tell you the JPX921 Irons are the hottest they’ve ever made.  It’s not even close.

Aside from the obvious distance I hit these irons compared to other irons, what I really appreciated was their sound and feel.  Most game improvement irons lack responsiveness and sound loud at impact.  Not so with the JPX921s.  They felt as good as any forged player’s club I’ve hit in recent memory.

Aesthetically, these clubs are above par too.  Even though they’re bigger than what I’m used to, the lines are clean and the clubhead profile makes you feel like King Kong when you’re over the ball.

I don’t have anything but high marks for these clubs.

Conclusion

Mizuno isn’t going to stop making good player’s golf clubs any time soon.  But by the looks of things, they aren’t going to stop making premium game improvement irons either.

The JPX921s are just the latest iteration to find their way into the bags of golfers around the world.  They truly are one of the foremost irons in their category.  If you haven’t hit them yet, but want more distance and forgiveness, I suggest you do.
