When you think of Cleveland, wedges are probably what comes to mind.  For decades the company has made the most popular short game clubs in golf.

But today we’re going to talk about the Launcher UHX irons.  Believe it or not, these irons were introduced all the way back in 2019.  But they remain hugely popular today.

The Launcher UHX Irons are a combo set that offer plenty of forgiveness in the longer irons, and lots of playability in the short ones.

These irons have all sorts of cool tech and design characteristics designed to help you get the most out of your game.

Let’s dive in a little deeper.

Key Features

  • Utility hollow design in the long irons affords both distance and forgiveness.
  • Cavity back short irons are responsive and provide untold control.
  • HT1770M steel faces are hotter than any iron face Cleveland has ever designed.

Design and Technology

Progressive iron sets are nothing new.  But where a lot of them go wrong is in their transition.  They tend to go from large and forgiving to compact and much less forgiving in a single club.

Such isn’t the case with the UHX Irons.  Each clubhead is strategically designed to become a little smaller as you work your way up through the set.  Is there a stark difference between the three-iron and the nine-iron?  Yes.  But arriving at that difference is a slow, subtle process.

Next, we need to talk about the faces of these irons.  They’re made of HT1770M steel.  The material is hard and creates maximum ball speed for increased distance.

The faces are also thinner on the toe and thicker on the heel.  This design prevents mishits from losing too much distance while also increasing MOI.

The long irons feature a hollow cavity design.  Compared to traditional long irons, the ones in the UHX set are more forgiving and fly higher.

We all know how important it is to hit short irons predictably if you’re going to give yourself looks at birdie.  Each of the Tour Zip grooves in the UHX Irons is individually milled to produce maximum spin for consistent strikes and flight from any lie.

All the irons feature a V-shaped sole that improves turf interaction and lots of relief on fat shots.

Just because these clubs are going on four years old doesn’t mean they lack anything in the design or technology departments.

Specs

A complete set of Cleveland Launcher UHX Irons comes in three-iron through pitching wedge.  If you choose, both gap and sand wedges are available for an upcharge.

Stock shaft options are the Miyazaki C KUA 60 and the Dynamic Gold DST 98.  Both are available in regular and stiff flex.

Our Experience

I had the chance to hit the Cleveland Launcher UHX Irons when they first came out in 2019.  I remember thinking that the set was one of the most underrated progressive sets on the market at the time.

They set themselves apart in their seamless transition.  Whereas a lot of progressive sets feel like two completely different sets in one, such isn’t the case with the UHXs.

As someone that’s always struggled to be consistent with my long irons, I found the UHX long clubs easy to hit.  Their utility design made it easy to get the ball in the air and their forgiveness was exceptional.

The V-shaped sole was terrific too.  My fat shots didn’t feel all that bad, and the ball didn’t lose yardage like it normally does.

The short irons were a dream to hit as well.  Their smaller profile gave me all the confidence I needed to control trajectory and hit different shots.

Conclusion

Even though Cleveland is known for their wedges, the rest of their clubs are nothing to slouch at.

The Launcher UHX Irons are no exception.  They’re jam-packed with innovative design and technology features that have proven to help golfers of all abilities hit the ball more consistently and shoot lower scores.

If your traditional irons aren’t performing as consistently as you’d like, a progressive set might be just what you’re looking for.  Having hit the Cleveland Launcher UHXs myself, I can attest that they’re as good as it gets in the progressive set category.
