Callaway Big Bertha B21 Driver Review
Callaway Big Bertha B21 Driver Review

$349.95

Every time I turn around, it seems like Callaway is coming out with a hot new driver.  Most recently, I had the chance to hit the drivers in the Epic line.  Let me tell you, these clubs are hot off the face.

In response to our review of the newest Epic line of drivers, I received multiple requests to do some research on the Big Bertha B21 driver.  While I had heard of this club, I didn’t know much about it.  But I was curious to learn more.

So, I took to the streets and dove in head first with the Big Bertha B21.  Let’s take a closer look at the findings.

Key Features

  • AI Flash Face design promotes faster ball speeds across the face for more distance, even on mishits.
  • Internal draw bias promotes straighter shots for players that slice.
  • Jailbreak Technology and T2C Triaxial Carbon Crown allow for faster clubhead speed and increased forgiveness.

Who Should Buy the Callaway Big Bertha B21 Driver?

The answer here is simple: anyone who fights a slice off the tee and wants straighter, longer tee shots.

While you probably won’t find the B21 in the bags of many Tour Players (they don’t fight a viscous slice), this is the perfect club for the amateur golfer that aims too far left, and comes over the top, and watches time and again as their ball sails off to the right (the opposite for left-handed players).

Without “fixing” your golf swing, the B21 will help you find more fairways and have more fun.

Callaway Big Bertha B21 Driver Detailed Review

Design and Technology

Callaway continues to push the envelope when it comes to driver technology and design.  I never thought I’d see the day when AI was used in the design process.  But sure enough, that’s what Callaway is doing.  With that said, there’s plenty more tech to talk about in the B21.

In order to create a higher launch with less spin, Callaway has moved the CG farther forward and lower in the head.  In testing, this has indeed reduced spin and increased launch angle – the equation for long, straight drives.

Internal draw bias has added weight in the heel of the club which helps players square the face through impact for straighter shots.

The face is somewhat revolutionary as well.  AI designed Flash Face SS21 is designed to promote faster ball speeds across the face for more distance.

Callaway’s patented Jailbreak Technology employs two vertical bars behind the face that connect the crown and sole.  The extra reinforcement increases stability at impact and also works to promote faster ball speeds.

The T2C Triaxial Carbon Crown is much lighter than in previous models.  This has allowed weight to be redistributed to other areas of the club where it’s more efficient.

Specs

The Callaway Big Bertha B21 driver comes in lofts of nine, 10.5, and 12.5 degrees of loft.  Each standard loft can be adjusted down one degree or up two degrees.  Length is 45.75” and the lie angle is 460cc.  Swing weight is D2.

Stock shaft options are the Callaway RCH 45 available in light and regular flex; the Callaway RCH 55 available in light, regular, and stiff flex; and the Callaway RCH 65 available in regular and stiff flex.

Our Experience

I haven’t had the chance to hit the Big Bertha B21 personally (I tend to draw the ball too much, so this club doesn’t fit my swing), but a number of our readers have.  Across the board, their feedback has been resoundingly positive.

Specifically, they’ve noted much straighter, longer tee shots thanks to the inherent draw bias.  They also tout the solid feel and sound at impact, even on mishits.

PROS
  • Built-in draw bias helps reduce slice curvature.
  • Plenty of adjustability options make driver customization and fitting easy.
  • Lightweight clubhead allows golfers to increase swing speed resulting in greater distance.
CONS
  • Draw bias is not of benefit for players that naturally draw the ball.
  • Lack of stock shaft options might be a deterrent for some players.
  • Shipping times have been unpredictable.

Conclusion

Callaway doesn’t produce drivers that are subpar, period.  The thought, innovation, and technology that go into every one of their clubs are the best of the best.

That’s certainly the case with the Big Bertha B21.  The company was readily aware that most amateurs struggle with a slice, and knew they could offer a club to help counter the dreaded miss, while optimizing performance for more distance.

If you’re looking to get more distance out of your drives and find more fairways, you need to give the Callaway Big Bertha B21 a shot.
