Best Golf Iron Shafts

I remember my first set of golf clubs.  They were handed down from father and were a far cry from what I play with today.  The truth is, equipment has come a long way since the days when I had that original set of Wilson Staff Fluid Feels.

While the technology that goes into the golf club heads of today has made the game a lot easier for players of all skill levels, advancements in shafts have come a long way too.  So much so that having the right shafts in your clubs is just as important as finding the right clubheads.

With so many options on the market, choosing the right iron shafts for your game can be a daunting proposition.

The good news is that we’ve tested the best shafts of 2022 here at Golfer’s Authority.  In this guide, we’re going to discuss what factors you should consider when buying iron shafts, and review the best available options.

Top 10 Best Golf Iron Shafts

Now that we’ve discussed the factors you should consider when choosing iron shafts, let’s have a closer look at the best options on the market for 2022.

Project X Rifle 6.0 Steel Shafts

For quite some time, Project X has been a major player in golf club shaft manufacturing.  The Rifle 6.0 iron shafts are no exception.

This is a popular shaft for better players that are looking to control ball flight on approach shots.  They provide ideal energy transfer between the club and the ball.  This allows players to optimize both distance control, workability, and trajectory.

Project X is known for their quality control.  If you choose to go with the Rifle 6.0 iron shafts, you know you’re getting a quality product.

True Temper Dynamic Gold AMT X100 Steel Shafts

Much like Project X, True Temper is an industry leader in iron shafts.

The AMT X100 shafts are a great choice for players with fast swing speeds that benefit from a heavier shaft.

These shafts are designed as a progressive set as well.  They’re lighter in the long irons, and heavier in the short irons.  This allows players to maximize distance in the long clubs, and control flight and distance in the shorter ones.

On the whole, these shafts give better players the best of both worlds.

UST Mamiya Recoil 80 Graphite Shafts

If you’re used to playing graphite shafts, there might not be a better choice this year than the Recoil 80 from UST.

This shaft is a great option for a wide range of players.  It’s midweight design creates optimal launch angle and maximizes feel and responsiveness.

Did we mention distance?  As this shaft’s name would suggest, Recoil Technology provides explosive distance throughout the bag.  If you’re looking to every iron in your bag farther, this is the shaft for you.

Fujikara Pro Series 95i Graphite Shafts

Another premier iron shaft designed for distance is the Fujikara Pro Series 95i.

These shafts are perfect for players with slower swing speeds, or that have a hard time getting the ball in the air.  That’s due in large part to the extra bit of weight the Pro Series 95i’s have compared to other graphite shafts.

The materials used in the manufacturing process are second to none also.  Their construction allows for ideal torque and flex to be delivered at impact.

The whole package is what these irons give – distance, height, and feel all in one.

KBS Max 55 Senior Graphite Shafts

We don’t like to admit it, but as we get older, we lose swing speed and therefore distance.  That’s exactly what the KBS Max 55 Senior shafts are designed to help combat.

These are some of the lightest shafts on the market.  That allows seniors to maximize clubhead speed and carry distance and get the ball in the air.

Just because these shafts are light, however, doesn’t mean they sacrifice control or responsiveness.

If you’re a senior and feel like you could more out of your equipment, start by checking out the KBS Max 55 Senior shafts.

Grafalloy ProLaunch Blue Graphite Shafts

Let’s face it, not all of us always hit our shots exactly where we’re looking.  If you have a tendency to hit your irons offline, you should strongly consider trying the ProLaunch Blue iron shafts from Grafalloy

These might be the most stable graphite shafts ever made.  That means that there’s very little torque through the hitting area.  As a result, the clubface comes in square to the ball and shots fly straight.

The lighter weight is also great for players with slow swing speeds.  Not only will these shafts increase distance, they’ll help you hit approach shots higher too so you hold more greens and putt for birdie.

KBS TGI Tour 80 Graphite Shafts

Graphite shafts aren’t meant just for beginners or players with slow swing speeds.  In fact, some of the world’s best players prefer graphite over steel.

If this sounds like you, the KBS TGI Tour 80 iron shafts deserve a try.

The key to this shaft’s performance is it’s lightweight.  Whereas many steel shafts weigh 100 grams, these shafts weigh only 80 grams.  Despite the fact that these shafts are lighter, their design allows them to maintain the stiffness that better players demand.

This design means more distance without sacrificing control.  Sounds like a winning combination to me.

MCA Golf Mitsubishi Kuro Kage Graphite Shafts

For the longest time, Mitsubishi only made shafts for drivers and fairway woods.  That’s no longer the case.

The Kuro Kage graphite iron shafts have been met with rave reviews.

Weighing in at only 63 grams, this is one of the lighter shafts you’ll find.  Again, that means faster swing speed and more distance.

These shafts are also designed with low resin content.  That means more stability at impact and straighter shots.

Mitsubishi Kuro Kage shafts are a great option for golfers looking for both increased distance and consistency.

Matrix Ozik Program F15 80 Graphite Shafts

The Program F15 80 iron shaft from Matrix Ozik is the company’s flagship iron shaft.  It’s designed to deliver the utmost feel and control.

HD internal design creates more consistent shot patterns than comparable steel shafts.  And the fact that it’s graphite means increased distance too.

Even though this shaft is one of the more expensive options, it’s sure to deliver on all fronts.

Alpha Platinum Unbreakable Graphite Shafts

If durability and longevity are important to you, check out the Alpha Platinum iron shafts

It’s a well-known fact that graphite shafts break more easily than steel shafts.  That’s just the nature of the material.

But Alpha has taken this theory head on. That’s why they created the Unbreakable shaft that’s meant to stand all the play and shock you can give it.  They even provide a lifetime warranty if their shafts become defective in any way.

If you’re like a few of my buddies that tend to get a little aggressive with their golf equipment, these shafts are worth a look.

What Should You Consider When Buying Iron Shafts?

golf iron

Flex

Iron shafts come in different flexes ranging from options meant for the best players in the world with the fastest swing speeds, all the way to juniors who are just starting out.

Before you buy the first shaft you see, you should get fitted to see what flex is best for your game.

For most male golfers with moderate swing speeds, regular flex is likely the best option.  If you swing the club at a high rate of speed, you might want to consider stiff or extra stiff.  On the other hand, if you’re a lady or senior, going with a lighter, more flexible shaft will help you get the most out of your iron game.

Graphite or Steel

Just like shaft flex, choosing between graphite and steel irons is an important factor to consider.

Steel shafts are more responsive than graphite shafts and are normally preferred by better players and those with fast swing speeds.

Graphite shafts lack the feedback of steel shafts, but can offer benefits of more distance and higher ball flight.

irons for the money

Cost

The shafts of today aren’t necessarily cheap.  Most major manufacturers offer a number of stock options in their irons that fit most players.

However, there are countless options available for upgrades that can make a significant difference in your ball striking.  If you choose one of these specialty shafts, just be aware that there’s going to be a price tag.

Conclusion

I still have that old set of Wilson Staff Fluid Feel irons my father gave to me when I was a kid.  While they’re fun to take out and hit once in a while, they mostly occupy a space in my garage.

Since I first learned to play with those clubs a long time ago, golf equipment has advanced in ways we couldn’t imagine back then.

A significant part of the revolution has been iron shafts.  Today, choosing the right iron shaft for your swing is essential if you’re going to get the most out of your equipment and shoot lower scores.

Before you make a decision on what shaft to go with in your irons, try some of the shafts above.  We don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
